Walther Klemm* (Karlsbad 1883 - 1957 Weimar) Moorbach color lithography/paper 41 x 40 cm signed Walther Klemm SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 400 - 800 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 400 Walther Klemm was a German painter, printmaker, illustrator, and university professor. Born on June 18, 1883, in Karlsbad, he studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts under Kolo Moser and Anton von Kenner, as well as art history at the University of Vienna; he created his first color woodcuts around 1903, began exhibiting with the Vienna Secession in 1904, and worked in a shared studio with Carl Thiemann in Prague and Dachau (1907–1913). He later became a member of the Berlin Secession (1910); in 1913, he was appointed professor and head of the graphic arts department at the Weimar Academy of Fine Arts, a position he held until 1949, and in 1952, he was named an honorary senator of the Weimar institution. Klemm mastered the woodcut and color woodcut mediums as well as book illustration (Goethe’s *Faust*, *Till Eulenspiegel*, *Don Quixote*), landscapes, animal studies, and portraits characterized by strong chiaroscuro contrasts. His work is situated within the context of the Dachau artists' colony, the Vienna and Berlin Secessions, the Weimar Academy, and the major exhibition landscape of the era—extending to the Great German Art Exhibition—while also touching upon the development of graphic art associated with the Bauhaus. Stylistically, Klemm was significantly influenced by Japanese color woodcuts—such as those by Hiroshige and Hokusai—and by Emil Orlik, while figures like Harry Graf Kessler represent the cultural milieu of his time in Weimar.
