Bauer, Marius Alexander Jacques (born 1867 in The Hague; died July 18, 1932, in Amsterdam): Oriental Market Scene, ca. 1900; oil on wood panel, signed lower right, 14 x 18.5 cm. Gold-stucco frame. Bauer, a well-traveled Impressionist and lover of the Orient, produced watercolors and oil paintings of Oriental cities, camels, elephants, snake charmers, belly dancers, caravans in the desert, Arabs, and mosques. Everywhere he went, he made sketches on site and purchased photographs, which he used at home as the basis for his paintings—into which he always incorporated his personal observations. Painting 1813
