Daniel Meyer - Antiquitäten & Auktionen

1708 - Constable, John (or son, attributed) (1776, East Bergholt, Suffolk; died March 31, 1837, in London-Hampstead): English coastal landscape with a watermill, featuring two children and a mule.Oil on canvas, original canvas and stretcher with wax seal of Louis Napoleon Hart as well as 2 illegible paper labels, canvas stamp “Brown High Holborn London,” age-related craquelure, 50x76 cm, 19th-century English frame, unrestored and slightly soiled. Work from the late creative phase beginning in 1825, circa 1830 and later, with a light, sketch-like line and bold brushwork. The motif of the milkmaid with the donkey and wicker basket has no parallel in his oil paintings but is developed in various drawings and sketches. His son, Lionel Bicknell Constable, is certainly a possible artist for this period—the composition and execution are fresh and masterful and date from around 1830–40.
