Czóbel, Béla (born 1883 in Budapest; died January 29, 1976, there Hungarian Expressionist and Fauvist artist of Jewish descent): "Dodo and Her Brother" after Ernst Ludwig Kirchner—a reinterpretation with minor variations of the Expressionist painting *Dodo…* by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner from 1908 (Dodo was an acquaintance and model of Kirchner’s). Impasto oil painting on pine panel, 56x37 cm, characteristically signed “Czobel” lower left. Antique 19th-century gilded stucco frame, partially restored (old auction numbers in chalk on the back), acquired at a pawn auction in Münster approximately 40 years ago. Bela Czobel was a student at the Munich Academy and the Académie Julian in Paris. After World War I, he lived in Berlin until 1925. Kirchner knew her personally, at the latest, from Gertraud Rostosky’s “Neue Welt” artists’ colony in Würzburg (the painting remained in Kirchner’s possession until around 1930 and was reworked by him in 1920). The two also had many connections through the art dealer Victor Wallerstein in Berlin. This copy also appears to date from this period, 1918–1933. Painting 1700
