CARLE Alfred (1909–1977) Four-panel folding screen made of wood veneer, including rosewood, with a painted design of “Bathers at the Water’s Edge.” One panel is signed “Carle” in the lower right corner. Belgian school. Year: 1935. The Georges Carle interior design firm, located on Rue Royale in Brussels, was a prestigious establishment specializing in high-end interior design. During the 1935 Brussels World’s Fair, it played a key role in the design and staging of the City of Brussels Pavilion. It showcased the pavilion’s ceremonial halls, particularly around the famous Salon d’Honneur, where it harmonized the spaces to incorporate artistic wrought-iron grilles and large pictorial compositions created by Alfred Bastien. The firm’s decorative choices also framed the bas-reliefs by sculptors Marius d’Haveloose, Charles Marin, and Arsène Matton, which depicted picturesque scenes from Brussels folklore. This screen was specially created by Alfred Carle (1909–1977), Georges’s son, for this World’s Fair and was part of the Pavilion’s decor. Alfred, a painter, watercolorist, and designer of tapestry cartoons for the Gaspard de Wit workshops in Mechelen, was awarded a gold medal. In 1937, the Carle firm also participated in the International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques in Paris, Class 38 (furniture and furniture sets section).Documentation on the Carle interior design firm is included. Dimensions (one panel): approx. 180 x 60 cm. Dimensions (maximum opening): approx. 180 x 240 cm. This lot is subject to the resale right.
