Hjalmar Schacht Document Signed at Nuremberg, Attesting to "the active part taken by me against Hitler" in the 20 July Plot Partly-printed DS, in German, one page, 8 x 11.75, November 9, 1945. Document headed (translated), "The International Military Tribunal, Defendant's Application for Summons for Witness," made while preparing his defense for the Nuremberg trials. Schacht and his defense lawyer request testimony from "Colonel of the Airforce Gronau," citing his knowledge of these facts: "My part in the Plot of 20 July 1944 through the connivance of the late General of Artillery Lindemann." Schacht asserts that this will demonstrate "proof of the active part taken by me against Hitler." Signed at the conclusion in pencil by Hjalmar Schacht, and countersigned by his defense counsel. In fine condition, with professional cleaning to the paper. Accompanied by a contemporary English translation. Schacht’s request for Colonel Gronau’s testimony formed part of a broader effort to portray himself at Nuremberg not merely as a former Nazi economic official who had fallen from favor, but as an active participant in the German resistance. By invoking Gronau’s knowledge of his connection to General Fritz Lindemann and the July 20, 1944 conspiracy, Schacht sought direct military corroboration for his claim that he had worked against Hitler from within conservative resistance circles. His association with the anti-Hitler opposition had serious consequences: after the failed assassination attempt, Schacht was arrested and imprisoned by the Nazis. At Nuremberg, where he was charged with conspiracy and crimes against peace, this record of opposition became an important element of his defense; the Tribunal ultimately acquitted him on both counts.
