Fritz Sauckel Autograph Letter Signed at Nuremberg, Requesting Volumes for His Lawyer, Robert Servatius Nazi politician (1894-1946) who served as Gauleiter of Thuringia and General Plenipotentiary for Labor Deployment, overseeing the deportation of millions of workers from occupied territories for forced labor in Germany during World War II. Convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity at Nuremberg, Sauckel was executed by hanging on October 16, 1946. ALS in pencil, signed twice, “Sauckel,” one page, 8 x 7, no date [1945-46]. Handwritten letter in German, ostensibly written during the Nuremberg trials, requesting the urgent return of two volumes to his defense lawyer, Dr. Robert Servatius. In full (translated): “I’m asking that these two volumes be returned to my lawyer, Dr. Servatius, this morning. He needs them urgently today.” In fine condition, with show-through from mounting remnants on the reverse. Dr. Robert Servatius (1894-1983), the lawyer named in Sauckel’s letter, was a Cologne attorney who represented him before the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. Originally a specialist in tax and business law, Servatius subsequently defended Karl Brandt and Paul Pleiger in the later Nuremberg proceedings and became internationally known for representing Adolf Eichmann at his 1961 trial in Jerusalem.
