Hermann Göring Telegram on "New Altitude Records" Amidst His Post-WWI Fokker Aviation Career Telegram in German, signed within the printed text, "Goering," one page, 10.75 x 5.75, May 11, 1919. Göring writes from Copenhagen, in full (translated): "Shall recommend matter strongly. Am setting up here with new altitude records. Newspapers follow." In fine condition. The telegram dates from Göring's brief but active post-WWI career as a commercial and demonstration pilot for Anthony Fokker. Only three days earlier, on May 8, 1919, Göring had flown a Fokker D.VII from Schwerin to Copenhagen, where he began making exhibition flights and promoting Fokker aircraft in Scandinavia. His remark here that he was "setting up...new altitude records" and that the "newspapers follow" captures the publicity-minded nature of the enterprise: Göring was leveraging his reputation as a decorated First World War fighter ace to attract press attention and demonstrate the performance of Fokker's machines. Sent from Copenhagen at the very outset of this association, the telegram offers a concise glimpse of Göring attempting to convert his wartime aviation fame into a commercial career in the unsettled months immediately following the war.
