LINKE François (1855–1946) Sideboard made of veneered wood with floral marquetry, featuring a single hinged door and resting on four curved legs. Ornamentation in chiseled and gilded bronze with rocaille motifs. Signed on a bronze piece. (Fitted and opens from the back; key missing; cabinet closed) 96 x 87 x 42 cm Note: Originally from Bohemia, François Linke (1855–1946) moved to Paris in 1875 and established his cabinetmaking workshop at 170 Faubourg Saint-Antoine in 1881. He became one of the most famous cabinetmakers of the Belle Époque, revitalizing the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles through his remarkable mastery of marquetry and chiseled, gilded bronze. His collaboration with the sculptor Léon Messagé (1842–1901) gave rise to a particularly distinctive style of furniture, combining the rocaille curves of the 18th century with an ornamental freedom that foreshadowed Art Nouveau. His participation in the 1900 Paris World’s Fair, where he received a gold medal, cemented his international reputation. As a supplier to a wealthy European and American clientele, Linke also opened a showroom on Place Vendôme. This sideboard, signed on one of its bronze fittings, illustrates the cabinetmaker’s taste for precious veneers, floral marquetry, and Rocaille ornamentation.
