SEREBRIAKOFF, Alexandre (1907–1995) Interior with Light Wood paneling, 1946. Watercolor, gouache, and ink on paper. Inscribed “Paris, 30 rue Montpensier” in the lower left corner, signed and dated 1946 in the lower right corner. Image size: 32 x 47 cm (frame: 43 x 59 cm) Note: The son of painter Zinaïda Serebriakova, Alexandre Serebriakoff (1907–1995) settled in Paris in 1925 and became one of the most remarkable “interior portraitists” of the 20th century. Beginning in the 1940s, he specialized in the meticulous depiction of the apartments and residences of the international high society, working notably for Charles de Beistegui, Arturo Lopez-Willshaw, Baron Alexis de Redé, the Rothschilds, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. His watercolors and gouaches are now valuable records of the history of French interior design. Signed, dated 1946, and set at 30 rue Montpensier in Paris, this composition featuring light wood paneling belongs to this particularly sought-after body of work, in which architectural precision is combined with a remarkable sensitivity to color and light.
