Charmes-Chambertin has been recognized as an appellation since 1937. The place name “Charmes,” similar to “chaumes,” likely refers to lean, stony, and dry soils. Hubert Lignier’s Charmes-Chambertin comes from a tiny 0.10-hectare parcel planted in 1948. Located in the southern part of the climat, this parcel faces east-southeast, at an elevation of 260–275 meters, on deep soils that are predominantly clay-limestone and sandy. 2007 was a vintage saved by the sun. Although the winter was mild and April was the warmest in 50 years, early flowering was quickly halted by cool, rainy, and not very sunny weather from May through August. Disease pressure was alleviated from late August through September by sunshine, dry conditions, and a north wind that kept the vineyard healthy. The 2007 wines are charming, fragrant, and supple. The start of 2008 was difficult: a rather cool winter gave way to a cold and wet spring that affected flowering. After a fine month of May, rainy and unpredictable weather sets in until August. The ripening is saved by a warm and sunny September, as well as by north winds that keep the harvest healthy. With their fine acidity, the 2008 wines are taut, energetic, and precise, supported by a fine, polished tannic structure. The year 2009 began with a warm spring and early flowering. July gave way to hot, dry, and very sunny weather starting in mid-August. A few well-timed showers at the end of the month accelerated ripening, which was completed during the first half of September. At the end of the harvest, the grapes will yield ripe, full-bodied, fruity, and supple wines.
