ZIEM, Felix (1821–1911) Venice, Saint Helena. Oil on panel. Numbered 543 in the lower left corner. Studio stamp and title on the back. 18 x 27.5 cm (frame: 45 x 53 cm) Note: Throughout his career, Félix Ziem (1821–1911) maintained a special connection with Venice, producing numerous studies and depictions of the city, exploring both its famous monuments and the more secluded neighborhoods of the lagoon. The island of Sant’Elena (Saint Helena), located at the eastern tip of Venice, is part of this less monumental Venetian landscape, particularly conducive to exploring light and the reflections on the water. This oil on panel bears the number 543, as well as a studio stamp and its title on the reverse. These markings are consistent with the inventory practices of Ziem’s studio, many of whose numbered studies are now preserved at the Ziem Museum in Martigues.
