LECOMTE Paul Emile (1877–1950) Market Scene in the Basque Country. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. 60 x 100 cm (frame: 81 x 121 cm) Note: A student of Fernand Cormon and his uncle, the landscape painter Paul Lecomte, Paul-Émile Lecomte (1877–1950) developed a style of painting that focused on the liveliness of streets, ports, and working-class markets. Appointed Official Painter to the Navy in 1921, he traveled throughout France, devoting several works in particular to the villages and market scenes of the Basque Country. This significant oil on canvas evokes the atmosphere of the region’s traditional market squares, whose characteristic architecture can be found in Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Sare as well as in towns in the Spanish Basque Country, notably Hondarribia (Fontarabie), Getaria, and Pasaia (Pasajes), in Guipúzcoa.
