Domaine Hubert Lignier, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, MCMLV, 2017 (3 x 750 ml) Region: Burgundy Fill Level: excellent Capsule: ok Cork: ok Label: excellent appearance Packaging: 3 original wooden cases Notes: The cuvée name “MCMLV,” 1955 in Roman numerals, refers to the planting date of the vineyard plot from which it comes. The family acquired it at the foresighted instigation of Great-Grandmother Lignier, whose keen eye had noticed that this plot never suffered from frost. Located in Monts-Luisants, the vines are distinguished by producing small berries with thick skins and concentrated juice. The estate’s flagship cuvée, MCMLV, is a limited-production prestige wine of 400 to 600 bottles depending on the vintage, and pays tribute to the estate’s century-old style and history. The label was designed by the artist Joyce Delimata. The wines from this 25-are parcel, cultivated biodynamically, are vinified using traditional methods: with 30% whole bunches, the harvest ferments in stainless-steel tanks for 20 days using native yeasts. After 21 months of aging on the lees and in barrels, the wine is neither fined nor filtered at bottling. The MCMLV cuvée is distinguished by an intensity and depth typical of the cru and of the style of Domaine Hubert Lignier, as well as by a remarkable calcareous salinity. The 2017 vintage, the estate’s first, stands out for its elegance, balance, and silky tannins. In 2017, the growing season began with a very cold winter followed by a warm, dry spring. In April, frost spells spared the Côte de Nuits to a relatively large extent. From June to August, warm spells alternated with milder ones; sporadic rains encouraged gradual, even ripening. The harvest began on September 7 at the estate. Domaine Hubert Lignier will be pleased to include the winning bidder in its annual allocation. This allocation will be managed and invoiced directly by Domaine Hubert Lignier, beginning with the 2027 vintage.
