HANOTEAU, Hector (1823–1890) Rural Landscape. Oil on panel. Signed lower right. (wear on the frame) 27.3 x 35.3 cm (frame: 45.5 x 53 cm) Note: A native of the Nièvre region, Hector Hanoteau (1823–1890) was one of the leading figures of 19th-century French naturalist landscape painting. Trained under Jean Gigoux, he frequented the circle at the Brasserie Andler in Paris, where he befriended Gustave Courbet, Charles-François Daubigny, and Henri-Joseph Harpignies. His close relationship with Courbet led, in particular, to a collaboration on the painting *Baigneuses* (1858), now in the collection of the Musée d’Orsay. Faithful to the landscapes of the Nièvre region, Hanoteau founded a painting school in Briet known as the “École des Roses .” His work was the subject of a retrospective exhibition at the Courbet Museum in Ornans in 2013–2014, titled *Hector Hanoteau, a Landscape Painter and Friend of Courbet*.
