DUBREUIL, Chéri François (1828–c. 1880) French Warships at Sea. Oil on canvas. 112 x 158 cm (with frame) Note: Chéri François Dubreuil (1828–c. 1880) belongs to the tradition of 19th-century French marine painters. His knowledge of warships was based in particular on his personal experience at sea: in 1848, he served as an auxiliary midshipman aboard the French frigate *Le Mogador*. Specializing in ship portraits, military squadrons, and seascenes, Dubreuil captures the evolution of the French navy during the transition from sail to steam.
