17th-century Flemish School Woman with a ruff. Oil on enlarged panel. Bears a label on the back attributing the work to Cornelis van der Voort. (signs of wear, small losses) Original panel: 42 x 34.5 cm; enlarged panel: 48 x 40 cm (frame: 54 x 47.5 cm) Note: An old label on the reverse of this female portrait attributes the work to Cornelis van der Voort (c. 1576–1624), a painter of Flemish origin based in Amsterdam, where he established himself as one of the leading portraitists of the first quarter of the 17th century. Probably trained in the studio of Cornelis Ketel, he developed a style characterized by precise facial features and meticulous depictions of costumes, particularly the imposing lace ruffs worn by the Dutch bourgeoisie. His works are included in the collections of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Worcester Art Museum, and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp, among others. This earlier attribution provides an interesting piece of documentary evidence for the study of this portrait.
