JAPAN, 19th century Four-compartment inro in gold hira maki-e lacquer, featuring a design of chickens amid clouds on each side; the interior is in gold nashiji lacquer. Signed “Kajikawa” in gold on the underside. With cord and ojime. Height: 9 cm Note: The Kajikawa family was one of the great lineages of Japanese lacquer artisans of the Edo period (1603–1868), particularly renowned for its gold-lacquered inrō. Several generations of artisans worked under this name, notably in the service of the Tokugawa shogunate. This four-compartment inrō combines the *hira maki-e* technique—a decoration created using gold powder on lacquer—with a *nashiji* interior, whose metallic particles produce a characteristic speckled effect. The Kajikawa signature, applied in gold, links this piece to one of the most famous historical signatures in Japanese lacquerware.
