CHINA, 20th century Large eight-panel folding screen modeled after Coromandel pieces, featuring scenes of pairs of birds in a wooded landscape on one side and palace scenes on the other, with borders adorned with a fleur-de-lis motif. (detached in the center, signs of wear) Each panel: 178.5 x 36.5 cm Note: So-called “Coromandel” screens owe their name to the eastern coast of India, through which Chinese lacquerware was shipped to Europe beginning in the 17th century. Developed during the Ming Dynasty and particularly prized during the Qing Dynasty, this decorative tradition is characterized by large polychrome compositions depicting palace scenes, landscapes, and birds. These screens enjoyed considerable success in European interiors, where some were even dismantled to be incorporated into furniture or wood paneling. This Chinese screen features this traditional decorative repertoire across eight panels.
