Based on a work by Paul Jouve (French, 1878–1973) André Maillart (French, 1886–1951) Macedonian Buffalo, c. 1920 Copper engraving. Titled and inscribed “Macedonian Buffalo, Thessaloniki.” Height: 55, Width: 100 cm. After being demobilized from the Army of the Orient, Jouve returned to his studio, where, around 1920, he painted a canvas depicting a “Team of Macedonian Buffaloes” (private collection) based on sketches he had made in 1917. It was André Maillart, winner of the Prix de Rome, who engraved for Jouve at that time. This large etching was printed in an edition of only 50 copies, two of which feature a mosaic gold background. We thank Mr. Dominique Suisse, the artist’s beneficiary, for his clarification, noting that no print rights are associated with this copper plate.
