Sayed Haider Raza (Indian, 1922–2016) Untitled, 1987 Acrylic. Signed and dated. Signed on the back. Height: 24, Width: 19 cm. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection, Tours. From the early 1950s onward, Sayed Haider Raza explored the connections between France and India, his country of origin. Upon his arrival in Paris, he moved away from expressive figurative art to embrace abstract painting, in which form is discernible only through the title. The great intensity of his artistic vocabulary, combined with his profound sensitivity, brings his approach closer to that of Mark Rothko (Laurent Le Bon, in *Sayed Haider Raza*, Mapin Publishing, 2023, p. 10). His spiritual abstraction is reinforced by his gradual return to his native culture, which he fully embraced at the turn of the 1980s, the period in which this painting was created. The reds, ochres, greens, and blues are rooted in the color palette of Rajput miniatures, while also exploring natural elements. Black directly evokes Indian identity as the “mother color.”
