Stanislao Lepri (Italian, 1905–1980) "The Apprenticeship," 1966 Oil on canvas. Signed, titled, and dated on the back. Height: 49.5 cm; Width: 61 cm. Scratches and small losses. Molding frame. Provenance: Touraine Collection. Included: Stanislao Lepri, “Stanislao Lepri,” with a preface by Mario Praz, Editions du Regard, Paris, 1978. Born into a Roman aristocratic family and trained for the office of Consul, Lepri turned to art in 1942. A great admirer of his partner Léonor Fini, his work takes on a metaphysical dimension, evoking monstrous figures without sacrificing a profound humanity. Thus, the figure of the dwarf—the riding instructor in this painting—plays an important role. He never portrays him as monstrous but rather uses him to introduce the fantastical into reality. Lepri’s paintings, which he himself described as “ultramondi metafisici,” are labyrinthine and critical worlds that serve as sources of various truths beyond the reach of rational inquiry.
