John Alfred Horsburgh (1835–1924) – Portrait of a Lady (1867) Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 63.5 × 74.5 cm; with frame: 77 × 87.5 cm. A bust-length portrait of a woman elegantly dressed in dark clothing and a lace headdress, set against a backdrop of drapery opening onto a landscape. The composition follows the tradition of mid-19th-century British portraiture, combining a sober and direct depiction of the sitter with a carefully constructed setting. The rendering of the face, with its serene expression, is particularly noteworthy, as is the attention paid to the lace, jewelry, and the different textures of the clothing. Signed in the lower left and dated 1867. It is housed in a period oval gilt frame, with multiple labels and inscriptions on the reverse that may be of interest for provenance and identification of the sitter. Condition: generally good.
