Apostle, Matthias Stomer (c. 1600–c. 1650), Italian school, 17th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 64 x 49 cm (85 x 70 cm with frame). We thank Dr. Nicola Spinosa for his assistance in identifying this artwork. Formerly in a European private collection. A bust portrait of an elderly man with a white beard and an introspective gaze, rendered using strong chiaroscuro against a dark background. The directed lighting and anatomical realism reveal the characteristic influence of Tenebrism. The impasto brushstrokes and chromatic density lend psychological intensity to the figure, typical of the 17th-century Hispano-Neapolitan naturalist tradition. The work is in good condition and is set in a period gilt frame.
