991 - Exquisite Saint Francis of Assisi - South Flemish or Netherlandish Gothic, late 15th century

Exquisite Saint Francis of Assisi - South Flemish or Netherlandish Gothic, late 15th century Oil on panel. An austere and deeply spiritual depiction of Saint Francis of Assisi in an ecstatic pose, with his stigmata visible and his gaze raised upward. The linear rendering of the face, the intensity of the chiaroscuro, and the restrained color palette—dominated by browns and ochres—reinforce the atmosphere of mystical contemplation. The markedly vertical composition and the expressive style recall the Flemish-influenced devotional painting introduced in Seville by Pedro de Campaña, to whom this work is attributed. The scene stands out for its inner strength and formal rigor, typical of 16th-century religious art. Dimensions: 91 x 71 cm, unframed.
