Christ Supported by an Angel – Spanish School after Cano, Alonso – 19th century Oil on oval canvas. Dimensions: 80 × 63 cm. Framed: 97 × 78 cm. A depiction of Christ, semi-nude, seated on a rock and supported by an angel who rests his hands on Christ’s shoulders. Christ’s body, partially covered with a white cloth, bears the wounds of the Passion on his hands and feet. The composition unfolds against a twilight landscape, featuring distant architecture and a sky of grayish and pinkish hues. Christ’s dejected posture and the angel’s protective gesture lend the scene a profound devotional character. The work is presented in an oval gilded wooden frame, decorated with floral motifs.
