The body of Jesus, positioned at a pronounced diagonal, is supported and lowered using a large white cloth by several figures standing on ladders and at the foot of the cross. To the left, the Virgin Mary and the holy women express their sorrow at the scene; in the foreground, a male figure dressed in red stands out, supporting the body of Christ. The compositional dynamism, the foreshortening, the musculature of the figures, and the contrast between the white shroud and the intensely colored garments follow models of Flemish Baroque painting associated with Peter Paul Rubens.
