Trumeau mirror with a gallant scene – Venetian School – third quarter of the 18th century A trumeau-style mirror crafted from carved and gilded wood, characterized by an elaborate Rococo-style frame. The structure features abundant floral and curvilinear ornamentation, including scrolls, shells, and carved and gilded naturalistic elements that run along the entire perimeter. On either side of the mirror are decorated vertical moldings reminiscent of stylized pilasters, contributing to the overall sense of verticality and elegance. The upper portion is topped by an oval-shaped oil-painted panel depicting a gallant scene set in a landscape, featuring figures dressed in 18th-century fashion, accompanied by an animal, in a natural setting. This type of decorative scene was common in trumeau mirrors, lending a narrative and refined character to the piece. The trumeau mirror originated in 18th-century France and owes its name to its original intended location: the space between two windows. Positioned in this way, it helped amplify the light in the room thanks to the mirror’s reflective surface and the gleam of the gilded frame. Generally vertical and rectangular, these mirrors often feature an ornamental or painted panel at the top, as in this example, which is taller than the mirror itself. It has some damage to the crest, and the mercury coating is missing. Dimensions: 190 × 100 × 7 cm.
