Bust of Athena Lemnia – Churazzi Foundry, Naples – circa 1900 Bust of Athena Lemnia made of patinated bronze, stamped by the Churazzi Foundry in Naples. This bust of Athena Lemnia reproduces one of the most celebrated sculptural types of classical antiquity. The work refers to the representation of the goddess Athena attributed to the great Greek sculptor Phidias, whose original creation, made in the 5th century BC, was considered by ancient sources to be one of the most refined images of the goddess. Unlike other depictions of Athena, characterized by her armor, helmet, and warrior-like stance, the so-called Athena Lemnia is distinguished by a much more serene and introspective presence. This version was produced by the Churazzi Foundry in Naples, one of the most renowned Italian foundries for the reproduction of ancient sculptures. The Churazzi Foundry’s tradition is closely linked to the Neapolitan archaeological and artistic milieu, particularly to the culture of reproducing classical models that flourished in Italy between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their pieces were intended for collectors, institutions, and lovers of classical art who sought to incorporate reproductions of some of the most celebrated works of Greco-Roman sculpture into their interiors. The significance of these reproductions lies not only in their decorative value. For decades, Italian foundries played a fundamental role in the international dissemination of classical sculptural heritage, allowing models preserved in museums and archaeological collections to be studied and appreciated in other contexts. Dimensions: 41 × 30 × 23 cm.
