Globular wine jug, Ancient Israeli culture, Iron Age (1200–700 BC), First Temple period Hand-formed and fired ceramic with traces of black painted decoration. Dimensions: 16 cm high x 12 cm in diameter. Height including base: 20 cm. An interesting ceramic vessel from the Iron Age, belonging to the pottery tradition of the ancient Mediterranean Levant, corresponding to the biblical period of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. The piece has a globular body with a rounded profile, designed for storing and pouring liquids, especially wine, one of the most important beverages in the daily, economic, and ceremonial life of the societies of the ancient Near East. Its surface retains traces of horizontal lines painted in black around the body, a decorative feature characteristic of certain Levantine ceramic productions from the Iron Age. The simplicity of its form, combined with the functionality of its design, reflects the pottery techniques developed in the region’s settlements during the first millennium BC. This type of vessel was part of household furnishings and could be used in everyday contexts as well as in celebrations and ritual practices. The production and consumption of wine were especially important in ancient Israelite societies, as evidenced by numerous archaeological finds and references in biblical texts. This piece is associated with the ceramic traditions of Samaria, an important historical region located north of Jerusalem and linked to the ancient Kingdom of Israel. It is in good condition, with surface wear, slight irregularities, and partial loss of the painted decoration, consistent with its age. It comes with a display stand that allows its profile and volume to be appreciated. Provenance: Samaria, north of Jerusalem, Holy Land; discovered before 1978. The indicated chronological attribution and archaeological provenance require the corresponding documentary evidence. Lot stored in an international warehouse (outside the EU).
