Impressive Grand Tour inkwell/calamaio, Italy, 19th century Desk inkwell made of veined red marble with moldings and details in white marble, composed of several detachable elements. Dimensions: 13.5 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 9.5 cm deep. This elegant ornamental inkwell was crafted according to classically inspired designs popularized during the Grand Tour, a cultural phenomenon that reached its peak between the 18th and 19th centuries and transformed Italy into one of the main centers for the production of artistic objects for European travelers and collectors. The piece features a stepped architectural structure, with a rectangular base, a central body with molded profiles, and a classically styled upper section. It combines the reddish tones and natural veining of the marble with white elements that accentuate its decorative character. The upper section incorporates two circular recesses for inkwells, with metal fittings, while the detachable cover has two corresponding recesses on its underside. Its design is reminiscent of small architectural works and commemorative monuments in the Neoclassical tradition, especially the desks and other objects crafted in Roman and Florentine workshops for the international market. Formally, it can be linked to the decorative arts production associated with the archaeological taste promoted by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778), whose influence contributed to the dissemination of classical architectural models in furniture and ornamental objects, although this does not imply a direct attribution. The visual quality of the marble, the chromatic contrast of the materials, and the carefully arranged moldings stand out, lending the piece a remarkable sculptural presence. It shows wear, minor losses, and signs of use consistent with its age. Lot located in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. An export permit from the country of origin may be required.
