NORTH AMERICAN SCHOOL. 20TH CENTURY. Couple Embracing, 2000 Black-and-white photographic print. Dimensions: 35 × 28 cm. This photograph depicts a couple in an intimate setting, with a woman with very short hair and a large circular earring resting her head on the bare chest of a man, whose face is partially out of frame. The woman gazes to one side, while her back and shoulders occupy much of the foreground. The image is notable for the contrast between the skin tones of both figures, the closeness of their bodies, and the tight framing, which accentuates the sense of intimacy and complicity. The side lighting defines the forms and highlights the skin textures against a dark background, creating a composition of great visual and expressive power.
