Alain Lacoste (French, 1935–2022) "What Can Be Seen from the Rome Observatory" Bas-relief, assemblage of wood, fabric, and paint. Signed and dated on the back, April 2000. Height: 70, Width: 47 cm. Provenance: collection of Laurent Danchin (1946–2017), writer, essayist, and art critic, passed down through the family. Born in Laval, he was destined for a career in teaching before a stay in a psychiatric hospital upended his path; his encounter with Robert Tatin proved decisive. Alain Lacoste transforms salvaged wood and stone into bas-reliefs populated by intertwined figures and animals, combining graphic design, color, and wordplay. He is considered one of the pioneers of French “art singulier.”
