Edward Lear - Pigeon Parrakeet [Palaeornis Columboides] Description of the work: This beautiful originally hand-colored lithograph is from Edward Lear's Illustrations of the Family Psittacidae, or Parrots. The work was published in England between 1830 and 1832. Only 175 books were created of this work. Lear was encouraged to create the work by John Gould, N. A. Vigors, & Lord Stanley. Lear drew from life whenever it was possible. This allowed him accuracy and subtle detail that could not be garnered from drawing stuffed birds. Lear's work stands out in natural history because of the quality and detail and he is known as one of Britain's best natural history artists. Illustrations of the Family Psittacidae or Parrots was the first English ornithological work published in folio format with lithographic plates. It was also the first to feature a single species of birds. Edward Lear (1812-1888) was an English artist, author, and poet. He created some of the most engaging bird images published in the 19th century, and one of the first major artists to draw birds from life. He was employed by the Zoological Society and John Gould. em>Illustrations of the Family Psittacidae or Parrots was his first published work at only the age of 19. He also taught Elizabeth Gould how to draw birds.
