RARE AND IMPORTANT BOVINE FIGURE (part of a pair). Orange terracotta. China, Tang Dynasty (618–907). H.88 L.112. French private collection. Thermoluminescence test conducted by Arcadia-Milan on the pair from the same funerary ensemble. Reference number BB011. This prestigious piece was reserved for the tombs of the high aristocracy or the imperial elite. While smaller ox figurines symbolized food, pieces of this significance—or those depicted in a team—represented the essential pulling power needed for journeys into the afterlife. The strength and precision of the modeling attest to the quality of the imperial workshops of that era.
