Guanyin in the Royal Relaxation Pose; wood with significant remnants of various layers of polychrome paint; China. (Minor imperfections and losses, partially due to wood-boring insects.) Circa 14th–15th century. H. 107. French private collection. A striking depiction of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, richly clothed, crowned, and adorned with jewelry, seated in the royal relaxation posture (maharajalilasana) on the back of a lion reclining on rocks, its head raised. The combination of stylistic elements visible in this work suggests a date of creation between the late Yuan dynasty and the early Ming dynasty. Provenance: auction held on Wednesday, March 15, 2006. Millon & Associés. Expert: J.L. Estournel
