A TALLY [INSTRUCTION] LABEL FROM THE WINDLASS OF H.M. SUBMARINE GRAPH, EX-U-570, 1941 cast in enamelled copper with German instructions and 4 securing holes -- 5¼ x 5½in. (13.5 x 14cm.); together with a warning tally label in 3 pieces (4) Provenance: R. H. Gibson, author of The German Submarine War 1914-1918. H.M. Submarine Graph was a very rare example of a German submarine - U-570 - being captured in such a condition as to make it serviceable to the Royal Navy. Launched in March 1941, U- 570 was engaged twice by the R.A.F. during its first wartime patrol, with depth-charge attacks that incapacitated the submarine. The crew's only option was to surrender after destroying all sensitive information and their Enigma machine. H.M. Trawler Northern Chief then took possession and, after inspection, towed U-570 to the British naval base at Hvalfjörður, where it was repaired enough to reach Vickers, Barrow, where a full refit enabled her to enter war service as H.M.S. Graph in October 1942. Translations: "92:Instructions for mechanism for tightening slack rope by Motor Drive to Windlas After cutting off the current when the slack rope control is at "Hand Drive", uncouple and wait to turn the winch until the drum which tightens the rope stands again in its normal position for striking in; then the control lever for regulating the slack rope is in its position for putting back to "Current On" and to couple up to "Motor Drive". Gefahr! Spannen nur durch Ziehen! "Danger! Tension only by pulling!"
