ADMIRAL SIR RICHARD HUSSEY BICKERTON’S ARMORIAL COACH PANEL, CIRCA 1810 The wooden panel painted with the coat of arms of Admiral Sir Richard Hussey Bickerton within supporters depicting a sailor holding a pennant inscribed “Egypt” and the figure of Isis, all against a yellow ground -- 10½ x 13in. (26x 33cm.) Richard Hussey Bickerton (1759-1832) entered the Royal Navy in 1771. In 1801, he oversaw the evacuation of the French army from Egypt before acting as Nelson’s second in command in the Mediterranean, although ill health forced him to retire to England shortly before the Battle of Trafalgar. Appointed First Naval Lord in 1808 and promoted full admiral in 1810, Bickerton conducted the Grand Naval Review at Spithead, which greeted the peace in 1814.
