A HISTORICALLY INTERESTING CARPENTER-TYPE MODEL OF THE TRAFALGAR VETERAN H.M. BATTLESHIP IMPLACABLE, CONSTRUCTED WITH OAK FROM THE SHIP, CIRCA 1928 modelled by E. Matthews, the 14in. hull carved from the solid and finished in polychrome with brass guns, simple carved stern and figurehead, plain decks with simple fittings, masts and rigging, mounted to the waterline on an ebonised board within glazed wooden case with finials and paper provenance label -- 22 x 24 x 10in. (56 x 61 x 25.5cm.) Provenance: E. Matthews, chief architect of restoration, circa 1928. A French 74, built as the Duguay-Trouin in 1794, Implacable was launched just after the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Decommissioned in 1908, she became a training ship. After several restorations in the 1920s, E. Matthews, the chief architect, built this model. She survived World War II but was too expensive to keep, so the Royal Navy scuttled her; the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich preserves her figurehead and stern galleries. Corrosion to anchor, otherwise in good condition overall.
