FREDERICK NASH (BRITISH, 1782-1856) Seaman from 'Victory' carrying Lord Nelson's coffin to his beached catafalque barge at Greenwich, 8th January, 1806 Signed in pencil 'F. NASH' (lower left) and indistinctly inscribed Pencil, watercolour and wash 10½ x 17in. (27 x 43cm.) Provenance: Sotheby's London: Anonymous Sale, 5 March 1970, lot 139; Walker Galleries, London; Bonhams London: Marine Paintings & Works of Art, 10 August 2000, lot 202. On the morning of 8th January, a selected group of seamen from H.M.S. Victory carried the coffin (seen here going down the steps to the left, having processed through a guard of honour) down to the water's edge, where it was placed on a specially decorated funeral barge which then took its place at the head of a remarkable cortege of boats and barges that stretched almost two miles down the river to Woolwich. This rare picture was almost certainly painted on the spot. Suggested pencilled margins about 2in. inside left edge and about ½in. from top; light spotting around top left corner; signed in pencil 'F. NASH' (lower left) with four indistinct numbers or letters prior.
