Ø ENGLISH SCHOOL (18TH CENTURY) Lt. Abraham Gossett, circa 1794 Watercolour on ivory 2¼ x 1¾in. (6 x 4.5cm.); IDN: C1PSEH15 Gossett commanded the hired armed lugger Aristocrat, which, in company with another called Liberty, supported Sir William Sydney Smith's blockade (aboard the Diamond, 38) of Spergui Bay in March 1796. Under brisk fire from two shore batteries and small arms, the British destroyed all but one lugger and spiked the guns. Abraham Gossett was made lieutenant in 1798, retired, but was made up to Commander (on half pay) in 1829 and died in 1840; thus, he could not add one of the four Naval General Service medal clasps for 'Spergui Bay' when the medal was issued in 1847.
