ATTRIBUTED TO LEONARDO GUZZARDI (ITALIAN, ACT. 1798-1800) Portrait of Ferdinand IV, King of Naples, Ferdinand III, King of Sicily, and Ferdinand I, King of the Two Sicilies (1751-1825) Oil on canvas 28½ x 23in. (72.5 x 58.5cm.) Provenance: Harold Cooke Gutteridge (1876-1953) of Naples, author of Nelson and the Neapolitan Jacobins (1903), thence by descent. Ferdinand IV (1751-1825) was the son of King Charles III of Spain who on ascending the Spanish throne had abdicated his kingdoms of Naples and Sicily in his favour. In 1768, Ferdinand married Marie Carolina, the daughter of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria and sister of Queen Marie Antoinette of France, In 1798 Ferdinand and his family were forced to flee Naples following the French invasion when they were evacuated to Sicily by Admiral Lord Nelson in H.M.S. Vanguard. Ferdinand regained his throne with Nelson’s assistance in 1799 but was forced to flee again in 1805, eventually returning to reclaim his throne in 1815. Leonardo Guzzardi was court painter to King Ferdinand and Queen Maria Carolina of Naples for whom he produced a series of royal portraits, examples of which are on display at the Palace of Capodimonte in Naples. In 1798-9, Guzzardi, again likely on the king’s order, completed a celebrated group of portraits of Admiral Lord Nelson. Light scattered retouching throughout, 4in. paint loss to lower right margin. 36 x 30in. Framed
