WILLIAM EDGAR (AUSTRALIAN, 1870-1918) The Inver Line's three-masted barque 'Invergarry' under sail Signed 'W. Edgar' (lower left) and inscribed 'Temple West Photo' (lower right) Oil on board 18½ x 22½in. (47 x 57cm.) Frederick Temple West (1854-1910) was a pierhead painter based in Newcastle, Australia. Later, he photographed ships and employed other artists, such as William Edgar (1870-1918), Reginald Borstel (1875-1922), and Alfred Dufty (1858-1924), to produce detailed paintings based on the photographs. The Invergarry was a 1,425-ton barque built by McMillan of Dumbarton, renamed Garthgarry in 1921; she was dismasted and broken up in 1924. Framed 23 x 27in. Paint loss and scattered scratching, some surface dirt, will benefit from a clean.
