Churchill (Sir Winston Spencer) The People's Rights, first edition, second state with p.71 correctly numbered, Appendix and Index at rear, Leonard E. Boxall's bookplate on front pastedown, some browning (as usual), light spotting to endpapers, minor marginal nicks and chips to several pp. including title, hinges slightly cracked, particularly to upper cover, original red cloth, a little darkened, gilt, joints and extremities lightly rubbed, slight splitting to upper cover joint, a few light stains and scuff marks, spine ends and corner tips slightly rubbed, t.e.g., 8vo, [Cohen A31.1.b], [1909]. *** Regarded as one of the rarest of Churchill's books. After the Conservative-dominated House of Lords rejected the Liberal government's budget, Prime Minister Asquith dissolved parliament and took the case to the country, advocating higher taxes on the wealthy to fund an expanded welfare state. Churchill, as President of the Board of Trade, campaigned with a series of stirring speeches delivered between 3 and 11 December 1909. Hodder and Stoughton hastily published them ahead of election day, in both cloth and wrappers. The cloth issue preceded the wrappers issue by approximately two weeks. This copy does not have the p.71 mispagination, but does have a single Appendix and Index affiliated with first state copies, rather than the second state, wherein a second Appendix replaced the Index.
