CARL HEINRICH HOFF THE ELDER (GERMAN 1838-1890) Three Maidens with Fowl in a Classical Courtyard, oil on canvas 123.5 x 91.2 cm (48 5/8 x 35 7/8 in.) framed dimensions: 145.5 x 112.4 cm (57 1/4 x 44 1/4 in.) signed 'Carl Hoff' lower right, with an indistinct inscription beneath PROVENANCE Private Collection LOT NOTES Born in Mannheim, Carl Heinrich Hoff trained at the Karlsruhe art school under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and Ludwig des Coudres before moving to Düsseldorf to study with Benjamin Vautier. He became a leading figure in Düsseldorf's Malkasten artists' society, travelled widely through France, Italy and Greece, and in 1878 was appointed professor at the Karlsruhe academy, where he taught until his death in 1890. Best known for costume genre scenes, Hoff here turns to a classical Mediterranean courtyard: a young woman in a white chiton stands beside a flowering almond while her companions tend a rooster and a pair of doves, rendered with the free, painterly touch that distinguishes his mature work. His paintings are held by the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf and the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe. Keywords: Carl Heinrich Hoff, Dusseldorf School, German Academic Painting, Neoclassical Genre Scene, Classical Maidens with Rooster, 19th Century Figural Oil N.B.
