AUGUST VON SIEGEN (GERMAN B. 1850) A Street in Cairo, oil on canvas 77.2 x 101.6 cm (30 3/8 x 40 in.) framed dimensions: 99.3 x 124.1 cm (39 1/8 x 48 7/8 in.) signed 'Aug. Siegen' lower left PROVENANCE Private Collection LOT NOTES August von Siegen was a Viennese-born painter of city views active in Vienna and Munich in the second half of the nineteenth century. Working in the tradition of the veduta, he produced finely detailed views of Venice, Rome and the port towns of the Low Countries, and, in response to the period's fascination with the Near East, a celebrated series of Cairo street scenes. Here a sunlit square opens beneath a skyline of Mamluk domes and minarets; water-carriers gather at a well beside a carved fountain house, while a camel, a cart and robed merchants animate the street, all rendered with the crisp architectural precision and warm Mediterranean light characteristic of his Orientalist work. Keywords: August von Siegen, Orientalist Painting, Cairo Street Scene, 19th Century Orientalism, Mamluk Architecture, Egyptian Market Scene N.B. Condition reports are available upon request.
