CHARLES FAZZINO (AMERICAN B. 1955) The Metropolitan Opera, Lincoln Center, New York, circa 1984 acrylic, ink, watercolor and glitter on paper 94 x 76.2 cm (37 x 30 in.) [sight] framed dimensions: 120.1 x 102.3 cm (47 3/8 x 40 3/8 in.) signed 'Charles Fazzino' lower left PROVENANCE Corporate Collection, New York LOT NOTES Born in New York City in 1955, Charles Fazzino graduated from the School of Visual Arts in 1977 and went on to become the leading exponent of 3-D pop art, creating official artwork for the Super Bowl, Major League Baseball's All-Star Game and the Olympic Games. In this early, hand-painted original, an opening night at Lincoln Center unfolds beneath a glittering skyline: balloons spill from the great arched windows of the Metropolitan Opera House, a New York City Ballet banner hangs from the neighboring theater, and opera-goers in evening dress and top hats mingle with roller skaters, a balloon seller and a hot dog vendor around the plaza fountain, while taxis, a limousine and a horse-drawn carriage pass along Columbus Avenue and the Chrysler and Empire State Buildings rise at either side.
