ANGELA DUFRESNE (AMERICAN, B. 1969) Crab Catching, Catching Crabs, with William Sidney Mount, or What Happens When the People then Fend for Themselves...., 2010 oil on canvas 86.4 x 127 cm (34 x 50 in.) signed and dated on the verso PROVENANCE Monya Rowe Gallery, New York (label verso) Collection of Ambassador and Mrs. Alfred Hoffman, North Palm Beach Doyle, New York,16 June 2021, Lot 25 Private Collection, Connecticut LOT NOTES Dufresne’s title points directly to her source: William Sidney Mount’s late genre painting Catching Crabs (1865), now at the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook, in which a man and a boy spear crabs in the shallows of the Long Island shoreline. Dufresne restages the scene in loose, saturated brushwork under a violet-and-blue sky, turning Mount’s nostalgic rural idyll into something stranger and more open-ended. The painting is characteristic of her practice: she references other artists and films to draw connections between art history and her own experiences. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, she holds a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from Tyler, received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2016, and is Associate Professor of Painting at RISD. Her first solo museum exhibition was at the Hammer Museum, and she was represented by Monya Rowe Gallery in New York, from whom this work came. Keywords: Angela Dufresne, Guggenheim Fellow, William Sidney Mount Catching Crabs, Contemporary American Figurative Painting, Monya Rowe Gallery, Long Island Genre Scene N.B.
