Kleinholz' lower right PROVENANCE Dennis Hare Fine Art, Springfield, PA Private Collection, Virginia (acquired in 2003) LOT NOTES Born in Brooklyn, Frank Kleinholz won scholarships to Colby College and Fordham Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1923. After years of practising law, he began painting alongside Alex Dobkin in the 1930s and soon left the profession to paint full time, mounting his first solo exhibition at the age of forty. Newsweek dubbed him a "Brooklyn-born Gauguin" for his flattened, boldly outlined figures and warm, earthy palette. Kleinholz later lived in Paris, where he studied printmaking, and on the Île de Bréhat in Brittany before returning to New York in 1950; he died in Miami in 1987. His work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Hirshhorn Museum and the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. Keywords: Frank Kleinholz, Brooklyn Gauguin, American Modernist, Mid-Century Figurative Painting, New York Expressionist, Figures with Birdcage N.B. Condition reports are available upon request.
