Spratley, Administrator of the Estate of Beauford Delaney, dated April 9, 2018, describing the work as executed in Istanbul in 1966 or 1969 PROVENANCE Estate of Beauford Delaney Michael Emery Delaney, nephew of the artist Private Collection LOT NOTES In 1966 Beauford Delaney traveled from Paris to meet James Baldwin in Istanbul, where the two friends stayed in a small house on the Bosphorus. Baldwin lived in the city on and off for a decade, and it became a creative refuge for him. Delaney’s visit produced a small group of works inscribed with references to Istanbul.
